6)In an activity series, the metals are arranged based on their reactivity from highest to the lowest. from highest to the lowest their activity decreases, tendancy to lose electron decreases, requires less energy to be seperated from their compounds. activity of a metal can also defined by its ability to displace hydrogen gas from water and acid solution.
The highest active active metals like mg reacts with water giving hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide. metals like Fe does not react with water at normal temperature, but react with sulphuric acid to form ferrous sulfate and Hydrogen gas.
The elements arreanged with respect to the activity from highest to the lowest are Mg ,Zn ,Pb, Cu, Ag
Hydrogen is not a metal, but it shows some characteristic behaviour which shows some resemblance to the alkali metals. hydrogen is not electronegative so cannot be cosidered as a metal either. thats why it is kept sepertly in the periodic table itself. thats why the position of hydrogen cannot be fixed exactly with respect to all other elements listed above.
7) The position of Hydrogen in the above mensioned series can be found out based on its ability to displace Oxygen from metal oxides and reduce them to their metals. The oxide of metal is heated in presence of hydrogen gas. if hydrogen can remove oxygen from metal oxide then the Hydrogen is more reactive than metal. If Hydrogen cannot displace Oxygen from metal oxide then hydrogen is less reactive than metal. Hydrogen cannot displace oxygen from Zinc oxide to form zinc metal. so Hydrogen is less reactive than Zn.
But it can displace oxygen from FeO and forms Fe. FeO + H2 Fe + H2O so it is reactive than Fe. we know that Fe is more reactive than Pb Cu and Ag.
so thre position of Hydrogen the above mensioned series will be
Mg, Zn , H, Pb , Cu, Ag
8) a) silver is less reactive than Hydrogen. metals with acivity less than Hydrogen will not react with acids to produce hydrogen. hence silver will not react with dilute sulphuric acid to produce Hydrogen.
b) magnesium is a reactive metal .it is more active than hydrogen. Magnesium reacts with dilute sulphuric acid to form hydrogen gas and magnesium sulphate.
Mg + H2SO4 MgSO4 + H2
